Brace yourselves, world: Ma Wiz has finally learned how to text.
Long threatened but at long last achieved this week, thanks to her infinitely-more-patient-than-I friend. Huzzah! Now I can finally let them know, “running late!” or “on my way, can I pick up anything?” Welcome to the 20th century, Ma!
To celebrate, I invited them over to share this week’s WineWiz pick. We cracked open a bottle of 2018 Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly, which I bought last summer from Full Pull Wines for $30. Côte de Brouilly is in the Beaujolais region and is one of the 10 crus of Beaujolais.
All Beaujolais wine is made from gamay, which can make super bright berry and fresh fun wines. The Côte de Brouilly subregion produces wines with more body and heft, which this definitely has!
I chilled this outside in the cold for about an hour, and decanted for roughly thirty minutes after that. The color is ruby and purple. I got some blackberry and woodsiness on the nose. The wine is amazingly balanced for 13.5% alcohol. My first taste had big tannins that gripped the sides of my mouth but not overpowering at all. After that, the tannins calmed down some.
The focus group assembled generally liked it. This isn’t Pa Wiz’s thing at all, but he thought it was pretty good. Ma Wiz, who pretty much likes all red wine, liked this too. We agreed this would go great with leaner beef dishes. A grilled New York strip would be ideal.
I’m going to do my best to cellar my other bottles as long as I can. And hopefully Ma and Pa and I can taste them together in another few years. Zomg.
