I’m still not quite ready for traveling, yet. Certainly not on a plane. (Can we normalize wearing masks on planes when this is all “over”? I’m done with getting sick two or three days after a great vacation because I caught someone’s ick on the ride back.) Most wineries are doing tastings with appointments, and if I’m traveling, I don’t want to worry about missing my slot, or killing time to wait to be let in.
It’s just more planning than I want to do right now, even for something fun.
So I’m good just traveling via my cellar and remembering great places I’ve been.
This week I’m pretending I’m traveling to the Finger Lakes, one of my favorite places to go in October, with Hermann J. Wiemer’s Magdalena Vineyard 2014 Riesling.
Hermann J. Wiemer is in Dundee, on the west side of Seneca Lake. According to their website, the proximity of this vineyard to the lake extends the growing season. This is definitely a very fruit forward riesling, almost like a late harvest. It’s got tangerine on the palate and super round. This is definitely the wine you want with spicy Thai or Indian food, because all this fruit and roundness will counteract the heat in your dish. Not really crisp at all, but that’s OK. There’s all kinds of styles of rieslings in the world, and for my money they’re all worth drinking.
