Too Cold, Too Hot? Nah, Just Right
Monday it was cold with snow squalls here. I’ve been bundling up on our morning walks and cutting them short because it’s been too miserable. Suddenly on Thursday, it shot up to 70ºF, and there are thunderstorms expected later. Don’t like the weather? Wait 10 minutes.
There’s only one thing that is an almost perfect temperature right now, and it’s my wine cellar! I bust out a bottle of 2018 Owen Roe 'Ex Umbris' Syrah, and the bottle was almost the perfect temp to the touch.
March was Washington Wine Month too, so it’s good to close it out with this one from the Yakima Valley. If I ever get back to Washington, I’ll spend less time in Walla Walla and more time in the Yakima area, as well as the nearby Horse Heaven Hills AVA. I’m a much bigger fan of Washington and Oregon wines than California, and I enjoyed the slightly cooler weather wines of Yakima to most from Walla Walla (though it still remains atop my list of most fun wine regions to say).
The color is a nice inky purple with some red. The palate has black fruit and a little stoniness. There’s a shot of fresh juiciness in the middle. The tannins are very mellow. It’d go great with burgers, mushrooms, or smoked salmon.
And as a bonus, if you’d like to try some Horse Heaven Hills, you should be able to find Columbia Crest’s H3 line fairly easily at your local store. Let me know if you give it a taste!
